Battle Creek Vineyard was established in 1989 in the mid-Valley, not far from Salem, and has 110 acres planted to pinot noir - a decent sized vineyard around here. They've been producing pinot noir since that same year, and continue to produce estate pinot noir as well as bottling single-vineyard wines from other local sources.
Winemaker Sarah Cabot is best known locally for her years at Belle Pente winery, where she made a full lineup of pinot noir and other wines. Stints at Willakenzie, Omero Cellars, and a stage in New Zealand all populate her resume.
The 2016 Reserve Pinot Noir has a surfeit of rich fruit flavors, tending towards black fruits, all wrapped up in some fine tannins and supported by good balancing acidity. The wine is medium-bodied, a bit spicy on the palate, and lingers nicely through a good finish. There's a lot of fruit here for this level, and enough stuffing to cellar for a few years. Drink now, or hold.
