White Rose Pinot Noir Dundee Hills -- Vinous 92 Points
Premium Wine Club Selection
Our Premium Wine Club pick this month is the entry level wine from White Rose, made by Jesus Guillen. It was made with his signature technique of using whole cluster fermentation, and is from 100% estate grown fruit. As is the wont for the 2015s at this level, the wine is ripe, supple, seamless and going down very easily right now. This bottling - now with a couple of years of bottle age - is delicious right now, and delivers a lot of complexity at this price level.
White Rose Vineyard is one of the most distinctive vineyard sites in Oregon. It is a steep, south-facing slope that produces wine with a distinctive, high-toned red fruit character and a soaring floral aroma. Patty Green made jaw-dropping wines from the site through 1999, when new ownership took over. The wines languished after that, until 2008 when a field hand named Jesus Guillen stumbled into becoming the winemaker. A key wine critic praised the wines made by Jesus as akin to Romanee Conti, which is the highest pinot noir praise available. Since then, the wines have been awesome, and Guillen seemed to be on a path to notable success in the wine business. His untimely death at a young age last year was a tragedy for his family and a significant loss for the wine industry here.
