Eyrie Pinot Noir South Block 2014- Vinous 95 Points

There is only one person who has the distinction of being the very first to plant pinot noir in Oregon's Willamette Valley - David Lett of Eyrie, in 1965. The vines that produced the fruit for this wine were planted in 1968 to the South Block of the estate vineyard. Those vines still produce wine! And while yields are diminishing, the character of the fruit produced is amazing. There's a dense texture to the wine, and a wild fruit character that no other pinot in Oregon exhibits, despite a translucent, pale ruby color. It's layered and lengthy on the palate, with dark red fruits held in check by a fine tannic structure. And, it's highly ageworthy - I have tasted older bottles from this block up to thirty years of age that are in terrific condition.
The wine has been critically acclaimed, including a 95 Points from Vinous, with these notes: "Translucent red. Expressive, mineral-accented red berry preserve, cherry and floral pastille aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up hints of Asian spices and savory herbs with air. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and cherry flavors that deliver solid punch while coming off graceful, even delicate in character. Finishes extremely long, with emphatic floral thrust and silky, slowly building tannins that fold smoothly into the wine's sappy, incisive fruit. These vines were planted by Jason Lett's father, David, in 1968."
It has also received a Parker 94 Points, with these notes: "From vines planted in 1968 in the original Eyrie vineyard, the 2014 Pinot Noir South Block Reserve is pale to medium ruby in color with a savory nose of sweet tobacco and scorched earth with blood orange peel, dried black tea leaves, dried red roses and cola. Light to medium-bodied, it features red fruits in the mouth with lovely layers of amaro, yellow raisin and tobacco, with firm, fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity, finishing very long, layered and textured."
