2017 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand
$27 / bottle
WS 92 Points
From The Wine Spectator: "An aromatic version, with intriguing beeswax, honeysuckle, lanolin and marmalade notes that give way to a smooth, lush core of apricot and lime zest flavors. Mouthwateringly smooth and juicy, showing appealing complexity. Drink now.. -MW"
2017 Anselmo Mendes Alvarhino Contacto Portugal
$23 / bottle
Parker 91 Points
This is the most serious version of a grape that is often made into a light, fizzy style - but not this one! From Parker's The Wine Advocate: "Gorgeously balanced, bright, intense and expressive, this has tension on the finish and a focused feel. Showing a hint of lemon on the finish early on, it revels in its fine acidity as it airs out. If it was tight early on, it was far better some six hours later (recorked and in the fridge, of course). With air and a little more warmth, it seemed better balanced and transparent, very precise, but still intense. The juicy finish dribbled the fine fruit over the palate. . . . the combination of concentration and structure typically makes it a great bargain. As with everything Anselmo makes, this will age well, perhaps better than anticipated. This looks like a fine year for it."
2016 Chateau d Epire Savennieres
$25 / bottle
Sauvignon Blanc from France's Loire Valley
This is a far cry from New Zealand sauvignon blanc, and the contrast is delicious. This is racy, defined by the acidic and mineral cut, with piercing flavors of apple and white peach and a mineral-driven finish. Past vintage was rated WS 93 Points.
2017 Domaine Weinbach Sylvaner Reserve
$30 / bottle
Vinous 92 Points
FromVinous: "Crystalline straw-green. Very pure aromas and flavors of green apple, mint and coriander. Finishes long and mineral. Precise, vertical wine in typical Weinbach style . . . One of the secrets to Weinbach's Sylvaner is that they keep yields low thanks to a single-guyot pruning system as opposed to the double guyot used by most everyone else. This will match splendidly with escargot, oysters, asparagus and artichoke dishes."
2017 Nikolaihof Gruner Veltliner Austria
$29 / bottle
WS 93 Points
Austria's finest grape, for my money. The best gruner's have weight and complexity equal to the finest white wines in the world. From The Wine Spectator: "Multilayered and idiosyncratic, but focused and precise, exhibiting plenty of fruit and spice flavors, with pumpkin spice, cinnamon, passion fruit and lavender notes, balanced by a well-defined structure. Combines concentration and grace, showing the potential to improve over time. Drink now through 2029."
2017 Trisaetum Dry Riesling Estate Ribbon Ridge Oregon
$32 / bottle
WE 93 Points
From The Wine Enthusiast: "This dry, detailed, estate-grown wine shows less richness than the extravagant 2016 bottling, but remains tight and delicious on its own terms. Apple, fennel and white-radish flavors penetrate deeply into the finish, which lingers in a clean crisp peppery resolve."
