Suckling 94 Points
If you've been on our list long, you know that I swoon for Italian wines. One of my current vinous passions are the red wines made from the nerello mascalese grape, grown on steep mountain vineyards on the slopes of Mt. Etna on the isle of Sicily. This particular wine comes from vines planted in black volcanic gravel at 1,800 feet of elevation on the north slope of the (currently erupting) volcano.
Nerello Mascalese combines the weight and elegant structure of Burgundy with the tar, minerals, red fruits and fine tannins of nebbiolo. It's a fresh, juicy, lively wine with that volcanic-soil imparted focus. It's good now, but even a couple of months in the bottle will help it shine. This is not a huge, inky, weighty wine, but instead a paragon of balance, focus, and powerful elegance. At least a couple of cases will find their way into my kitchen at this crazy low price.
This wine was awarded a score of 94 from renowned wine critic James Suckling, with these notes:  "The dried-strawberry, fresh-herb and perfume character is fresh and appealing. Medium body, firm and velvety tannins. Long and flavorful. Always excellent. Drink or hold."
